Great Lyons sausage

Sir: Jeffrey Bernard observes that there should be a law against Grand Prix racing drivers spraying good champagne after a victory (Low life, 8 August).

For the 1924 French Grand Prix held in Lyons a monster sausage, l2ft in length and 10 stone in weight, was awarded to The Man Who Got Home First. This wondrous comestible was a singularly appropriate award for the eventual winner — the renowned gourmand Campari, pho- tographed drinking his champagne after his victory with the great Lyons sausage bal- anced on the bonnet of his Alfa Romeo.
