Value for money

Sir: I was not surprised to read that passen- gers on a train raised no objection when a couple carried out acts of gross indecency and protested only when they lit up after- wards. (Portrait of the week, 15 August).

You may or may not be aware that for the price of smoking on a London omnibus (£400) you can be drunk and disorderly and commit Actual Bodily Harm and commit Grevious Bodily Harm and assault a con- stable in the execution of his duty.

This is a pretty fair indication of moral standards in 1992.
