Arraigned in error

Sir: You remark (Leading article, 15 August) on 'the endemic corruption and incompetence in the force'. That from time to time there is corruption or incompetence is not in doubt — all organisations suffer from that — but the use of the word endemic is totally unfair. Public satisfaction with policing, 87 per cent in rural areas and 81 per cent in urban areas (British Crime Survey, 199(), would be perverse if your remarks were true.

You also repeat a newspaper report that the Home Office would like to see fewer graduates in top police jobs. The report was silly and your repetition of it naive. We have been working with much success to
