One good programme

Sir: I think I may be responsible for stopping your television critic watching Testament of Youth (8 December) — it's not the marrow season is it? I told him one day that Vera Brittain's book was a bore. I believe I may be the only person of the masculine gender to have got to the end of it. Once shorn of the author's own viewpoint and verbiage, the story gained wonderfully and the mixing-in of poetry from the period was perfectly judged. This was the best thing in television drama for years. Adaptation, acting and direction — the latter be it noted by a woman — were of the highest order and deserved more encouragement from the Spectator, which ought to spot the odd rays of class on the box when they gleam.
