do approve when you say "This is not a question of corporal punishment generally . . . (nor of) the caning of girls by mistresses. But the caning of girls by masters is quite another matter." - But that is only half the story. The words should read :

the chastisement of children by teachers of the opposite sex." As much harm can be done by a sadistic music mistress repeatedly hitting a small boy over the knuckles as by a master caning a girl—and it is probably a much more common experience.
