RUSSIA AND THE LABOUR PARTY

Sta,Until fairly recently, any mention of Russia at a Socialist gathering was greeted with a storm of cheers. To the conventional Labour mind, that other great nation, the United States, had, no doubt, some merits ; but it believed in the capitalism and private enterprise which had brought it such amazing prosperity, and these were anathema. But Russia— Russia had got rid of these iniquities, and also, by the way, of the millions it owed to foreign nations. What might not Russia and Great Britain, advancing together in frieadship, achieve? Unfortunately, Russia does not seem disposed to play. She does not show the least prejudice in favour of the British Government and its Labour leaders ; rather the reverse. Worse still, she seems to be treading the discredited road of imperialism, and, North and South, East and West, is quietly picking up bits of the territories of the earth or is acquiring spheres of influence.
