Sir: The news about Mrs Margaret Thatcher's election as leader

of the Conservative Party is the best thing to happen for a long time!

I hope one of her first steps will be to recognise that within the Tories, as in the Labour Party, there is a deep divergence of opinion on the EEC question. Mrs Thatcher could do much to heal this if she were to accept it and display a low profile on the Market question.

Then, after the referendum, those of us who felt obliged to follow the fine example of Mr Powell may be in a postion to return to the fold.
