The Paris critics commend the restoration of the five Spanish

pictures added to the gallery of the Louvre from the collection of Marshal Soult. The two Murillos, "Nativity of the Virgin" and "Miracle of St. Diego," costing 230,000 francs, (9200/.0 have been carefully improved and touched with reverence and precision : the other three are "The Funeral of a Bishop" and "St. Peter Nolasque and St. Raymond," by Zurbaran, and "St. Basil teaching," by Herrera the elder ; very excel- lent specimens of each master, and bought cheaply by the director for 70,000 francs (28001.)
