Mr. Goschen, though not, we imagine, favourable to State aid

to emigration, is certainly favourable to emigration itself. He has offered to contribute 10s. a head, £1,000 in all, towards the emigra- tion of 2,000 persons, under the auspices of the British and Colonial Emigration Society. Messrs. Fruhling will give as mach, Mr. II. W. Peek sends £500, and W.C. £250 more. The work will coat about £20,000, and a considerable subscription towards that amount has been already collected. We wish some very rich man would try the experiment of lending 100 men their passage-money, to be repaid on honour three years after landing. Giving is such a premium on improvidence.
