At His Own Risk 1 sympathise fully with Sir David

Webster's difficulties over the allocation of tickets for Covent Garden. The excessive demand is partly a result of very high standards and partly of the virtual monopoly which Covent Garden enjoys. I hope the same thing is not going to happen in London theatres. It used to be possible for a visitor to London to see five or six varied shows in a week. Pressed over the holidays for

suggestions, we have been able to recommend virtually nothing with any confidence. There are the National Theatre and the Aldwych of course, but it is not always easy to get in. And perhaps the Royal Court. Virginia Woolf and. A Severed Head have both been running long enough for any but the most occasional visitor to have seen them already. One might halfheartedly recom- mend a couple of the more presentable musicals, but no more. What then? It's a sad situation when when one has to fob off the eager inquirer with the warning that anything he sees is entirely at his own risk.
