"Narvaez arrived on the 15th before Madrid. The Municipality had replied on the 17th to his requisition that Madrid would remain neuter, but would not open its gates until the end of the month. The militia were under arms. A slight engagement had taken place. One captain and two men of the militia force had been killed. Great agitation prevailed in Madrid."

On the authority of Madrid advices of the 14th, the Moniteur describes the Spanish capital as well prepared for defence. There was a rumour that Espartero was approaching ; and Brigadier Enna was said to be on the point of entering the city. The Chronicle adds- " General Aspiroz appears to have made a movement towards General Enna, who was near Aranjuez. They were ignorant at Madrid as to what was the result. Aspiroz has since resumed his position at El Pardo. General Narvaez has quitted the environs of Madrid for the purpose of marching against Seoane and Zurbano, who were two days' distance from him."
