Selections from the Writings of John Ruskin, D.C.L., LL.D. First

Series. 1843-1860. (George Allen.)—The most eloquent of living writers is remarkable for the number of beautiful passages in his works which can be severed without much injury from the con- text. Often the thoughts scattered on the road are of more significance than the final aim of the journey. Mr. Ruskin is almost always suggestive, but by no means always convincing. We are glad, therefore, to possess a volume like the present, which can be taken up in leisure moments with the certainty that every page that is opened will be rich in intellectual life and full of stimulating power. The book, printed on thick paper and bulky in size, is based on the original Selections ; but various changes have been made, and the whole has been revised. A companion volume is promised, which will contain choice passages from Mr. Ruskin's later volumes.
