Asking silly questions

THE BEST verdict on this comes from Valerie Thompson, a true star of the mar- kets, who first twinkled at Salomon Broth- ers as a telex operator. In her book, Manag- ing the Euromarkets (Irwin Publishing) she writes: 'Rogues and rogue traders will always exist, and we all have an obligation to look out for each other. Bland or hard- to-follow explanations should always be investigated. There are extremely few geniuses in this world. Do not underesti- mate your power of perception or your ability to understand plain English. If something sounds too good to be true it probably is. Trust your instincts and do not be afraid to ask questions for fear of look- ing foolish.' Just think of the money that Peter Baring could have saved by asking silly questions.
