The Early History of the House of Savoy (1000-1233). By

C. W. Previte Orton, M.A. (Cambridge University Press. 12s. 6d. net.)—Historical students will be glad to know of this monu- mental example of the modern " scientific" history. Practically every statement of fact in the book is supported not merely by a reference to, but by a quotation from, the authority on which it depends. The narrative, consequently, makes no pretensions to literary merit or general interest, but Mr. Orton has amply proved in it his capacity for taking pains.
