On Wednesday in Cairo an attempt was made on the

life of the Sirdar, Sir Lee Stack, under conditions which would be scarcely possible except in Egypt and Ireland. The Sirdar was driving in broad daylight and in a crowded street, when a bomb was thrown by one of a group of Nationalist students. The bomb did not explode, but the students closed in on the Sirdar's motor and poured bullets into it at close range. The Sirdar was dangerously wounded, the worst of his wound; being in the stomach.- His A.D.C., Captain Campbell, was wounded in the chest, and the chauffeur in the legs._ It is astonishing that they were not all killed. • The assassins, without anybody trying to stop them, then entered a taxi-cab which was waiting for them, and escaped.
