Arise, Sir Mark

Sir; I find it extraordinary that at the Con- servative Party Conference no robust state- ment was made by a member of the Gov- ernment concerning the media stories of the arms deal with Saudi Arabia and Mark Thatcher, or the disgraceful riots in Lon- don on Sunday.

I have no idea whether or not Mark Thatcher had any connection with the consortium that arranged the arms deal with Saudi Arabia; if he did, I would have thought he deserved some recognition for helping this country to achieve one of the biggest arms deals, worth £20 billion, which produced employment for thou- sands over a period of 15 years.

Whether or not he received any financial reward, I do not suppose it compares with the money made by merchant banks who helped privatise various industries.
