THE THINGS BEYOND THE TOMB.

[TO THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."]

Sut,—Your paper on "The Things Beyond the Tomb" in the Spectator of September 15th reminds an old reader of the best traditions of the Spectator. You well point out that the kernel of what is revealed is not in environment, but in essence,—that of personal communion with God through Christ. This, however, must surely be reached, for mankind as now constituted, through various stages which may be regarded. as purgatorial, including our earthly discipline. When you further include in this latter " uncertainty " as to future recognition of those we have here known and loved, is there not risk of extending the same uncertainty to our own

future personal identity P—I am, Sir, &c., H. F. MAT run.
