Trains in Texas

Sir: Far be it for me, a New Yorker who has never been to Texas, to correct a native Texan, but your correspondent Mr Lee T. Pearcy (4 August) is totally in error when he inakes the statement that there is no passenger rail service in the State of Texas. If he checks the latest Amtrak timetable he "ill find that Texas is served by six trains, two each way, over three routes. The two North/South services are: The Inter-American' Chicago to Laredo, enters Texas at Texarkana, goes to Laredo, 682 miles from Texarkana, makes 13 stops in Texas, including Mr Pearcy's home town of Austin. The Lone Star' Chicago to Houston, enters Texas at Gainesville, goes to Houston, 380 miles from Gainesville, makes 9 stops in Texas. The one East/West service is: The Sunset Limited' New Orleans to Los Angeles, enters Texas at Beaumont, leaves Texas at .rsl Paso, 897 miles from Beaumont, makes 6 stops in Texas.

Although this train service is nothing to ura8 about, it exists. How long it will exist is another matter, as Amtrak cutbacks are to take effect in the near future. Walter M, Kaufman 20 Park Avenue, Apt. 12N, 'mew York, New York 10016
