Religion in the Victorian Era. By L. E. Elliott - Binns. (Lutterworth

Press. 21s.) AT a time when the ideas and beliefs of the Victorians have been promoted to the dignity of the Third Programme, the re-issue of Dr. L. E. Elliott-Binns's scholarly and comprehensive survey is particularly opportune. This notable work was first published in 1936, and it will be a long time before it is superseded ; the pro- portions are good, and the information accurate. The author has availed himself of the opportunity to modify one paragraph relating to the religious condition of Oxford in the seventies and to insert a reference to Liddon ; and he also draws attention to five very minor corrigenda. The fact that there are so few is in itself a commendation. Dr. Elliott-Binns has also recast the concluding sentence of the work. Unfortunately two footnotes—the first a reference to Bridges' The Testament of Beauty, the second presumably to St. Augustine's De Civitate Dei—have accidentally dropped out in the process.
