Lion couchant

Sir : I was intrigued to learn from Mr Nicholas Davenport's article (16 August) that it is now possible to grade films that the public will go to the cinema for into three handy categories —(a) current human problems; (b) Bond-type kiss-kiss-bang-bang sagas; (c) super spectacular epics. I was wondering how the undermentioned British films, all of which have registered suc- cess at the international box office, might be categorised: Darling, Morgan, Accident, The Family Way, Pooi. Cow and (a hit in Paris) The Girl on the Motorcycle.

None of these seem to fit into (b) or (c) and not all of them can be described as dealing with current human problems. However, they do have one thing in common—all these films were financed in part by the National Film Finance Corporation.
