LETTERS Surrey in danger

Sir: The Spectator is the first publication I have seen to suggest that the next election will be largely influenced by environmental issues. Andrew Gimson's article on the sad excesses in London's Green Belt (`Motor- way sadness', 16 August) may well prove to be more prescient than even he suspects. For I doubt if anybody in Surrey believes that the Green Belt is safe with the. Tories and I don't believe that 'most of the Surrey seats are relatively safe'. This is an easy judgment but it misreads the extent of the widespread anger about the despoliation of pleasant towns and villages. The Walton Bridge scheme will before long prove to be a much more passionate and demanding issue than Wisley or the supermarkets.
