Mr. Lloyd George, when he turned to the question of

food spoke with the utmost seriousness. The people, he told the House of Commons, must be called upon to make real sacrifices. Over- consumption by the affluent must not be allowed to create a shortage for the less well-to-do. Further, every available square yard of land in the country must be made to produce food. The nation as a whole must place its comforts, its luxuries, and its indulgences and elegancies on the national altar. " Let us proclaim during the war a National Lent."
