profiteering." Information had reached the Cabinet that the prices of meat and other kinds of food were being raised from 331 per cent. to 50 per cent. " There is no reason," said the Cabinet, " for this increase." The Law Officers had accordingly been asked to consider the powers of the Government in this matter, and to draft emergency measures to prevent, if necessary, the exploitation of consumers.
