OFF THE AIR SIR,—An acquaintance recently and casually re- marked

that the BBC is finding difficulty, and is in many cases unable to engage the most talented of the present-day musical artists. Their contract for- bids them to play or sing for the BBC because enthusiasts were recording their performances with tape-recorders, and presumably not buying records.

It is intolerable that recording companies, with

fortunes made from selling rubbish—and much of their money is made by recording rubbish—are able to buy the exclusive rights to musical virtuosity and are able to deny it, except to those who can pay the high price of a record.

Could anyone tell me if this is in fact the situation? If it is, is there any other listener who is filled with the same feelings of indignation and frustration as myself?
