"(dial Stevenson, A Study in Values Herbert Muller (Hamish Hamilton 35s). Liberal, orator, egghead,' wit—no doubt whose side Mr Muller's angels are on. A mawkish beginning develops into a workmanlike account, particu- larly of the 1952 and 1960 presidential elections and the Eisenhower era. Mr Stevenson deserved no less a tribute.

Warren: The Man, the Court, the Era John D. Weaver (Gollancz 45s). Mr Weaver is a devoted minister of the 'human touch.' Obviously pre- suming that a bald account of Chief Justice Warren's admirable reforming career would be too dull, he has larded his biography with colour-supplement anecdotes and snatches of dialogue—to no particular advantage.

The Hard Way Up: The Autobiography of Hannah Mitchell, Suffragette and Rebel Edited by Geoffrey Mitchell (Faber 28s). A charming book and a genuinely revealing social docu- nient. From being an undernourished drudge in her own home Hannah Mitchell is taken into ilervice at four shillings a week and finally be- monies a leading figure of the suffragette move- ment in the North. Would make a nice pair to Moll Flanders.

most unsavoury episodes in the country's his- tory. I must assume that they had no official help.

The message of this book is clear. The void of silence will always be filled. What is known in the capitals of Europe must be trusted to the ears and common sense of the British taxpayer.
