I am, as all readers of this column know, conspicuously

modest, not to say deprecatory, where any achievement by the University of Cambridge is concerned. When, therefore, I recall that the University Rugger match last term was won by Cambridge (just), it is only in order to quote a sentence from the current Cambridge Review mentioning that Jones, who scored the Cambridge try, "achieved the distinction of being the first man in a University match to cross Oxford's line since 1948." Clearly Cambridge and its friends have, in a classic phrase, a great deal to be modest about.
