Ra'ivvoy invigoration

The ticket strategy of British Railways, who year after year successfully counter the artifices of the travelling public compels ad- miration. There is a reason behind the ex- ception to their every rule but occasionally I am beaten in following their mind. Last week I travelled for the day to Sheffield and discovered that no first class cheap day returns on that route are available though there is a cheap-day second class day return. Since the first class normal return fare is 156s I had no hesitation in travelling at the second class cheap-day rate of 58s. Espec- ially as there is an excellent single class re- staurant car for lunch on the way up and open on the return journey for dinner. I used the restaurant car both ways as I should still have done if I had taken British Railways offer of a 156s first class return ticket. The result—a loss of several pounds to British Railways on their failure to sup- ply a cheap first class return fare as they apparently do on other routes.

Perhaps the commendable Railway In- vigoration Society (for the retention and modernising of railway services) will give them some advice.
