Reminiscenccs of Manchester Fifty Years Ago. By J. T. Slugg.

(J. E. Cornish, Manchester.) — A gentleman whose recollections stretch back to a period of fifty years ago, supposing that he has been in the habit of using his eyes and ears intelligently during that period (which Mr. Slagg certainly has), is sure to have something interesting to say. This interest is, of coarse, chiefly for inhabitants of Manchester ; but it is not confined to them. The whole makes a remarkable picture of the growth of a great town, a picture full of details that are often curious and valuable. Among such may be counted the personal reminiscences, as of Dalton, the ehenctist and the economical facts, such as the record of the water and gas supply. This latter affair has been from the first the property of the ratepayers, and it has been always a source of considerable profit. In 1879, the profit paid over to the Improvement Commiie sioners was more than fifty thousand pounds. It is interesting to note that the price of gas fifty years ago was twelve shillings per thousand cubic feet.
