BANKING IN THE STATES.

There are some interesting features in the statement of the Chase National Bank of the City of New York made up to June 3oth last inasmuch as they suggest slightly less abnormal conditions in the banking world in New York than those which have prevailed for a long time past. One good feature, for example, is the substantial increase in Loans and Dis- counts, the item being up 38,000,000 dollars compared with the end of the previous December, while over the entire year there has been an increase of 160,000,00o dollars. I consider that another satisfactory feature is the reduction in the holdings of United States Government stocks, which now stand at 618,84o,00o dollars compared with 780,000,o00 dollars at the close of 1936.
