Sir: Opinions may differ as to whether 'alright' is all right but surely there can be no doubt that 'prejudice' is not synonymous with 'opinion', 'belief' or 'conviction'. Yet it is being increasingly used as though it was. It is perhaps one more mark of the growing disregard for the correct use of English that your correspondent (16 July) who has the temerity to criticise Fowler should himself be guilty of such a meaningless solecism as 'authoritative prejudice'!
