Human bar codes

Sir: Since Dr Theodore Dalrymple has now been asked to swipe bar codes for each of his patients I wonder how long it will be before bar codes are tattooed on people (If symptoms persist . . . , 16 July). Certainly such a branding would help in the monitor- ing of those who had broken the law, and it would serve better than an identity card for everyone if such a document were thought necessary. The tattoo could include vital medical information about allergies and ill- nesses such as diabetes as well as a note of the person's blood group.
