Rude boys

From Kathy Walton

Sir: Vicki Woods believes that ‘Etonians have better manners than anyone else’ (‘Why not an Etonian for Prime Minister?’, 9 July). Some years ago, along with several other British commoners, I was invited to the wedding reception of a German aristocrat at her family schloss in Bavaria. While princes, duchesses, barons and countesses managed to arrive on time for drinks at 6.30 p.m. and dinner at 8.30 p.m., the two Old Etonians were alone among the guests in rolling up just before 10 p.m., looking as if they expected us to be honoured to see them at all.

I later discovered that the same OEs apparently failed to write to thank the bride’s parents for their hospitality. ‘Giddily wellmannered’, Ms Woods? I don’t think so.
