is no little subtlety and insight in this book. Sometimes we feel constrained to differ from the opinions which it advances. Sometimes we doubt. But we always feel that the author has something to say. National characteristics are a doubtful and difficult subject. It is easy to be too dogmatic about them, and the book is, it seems to us, too dogmatic. But it is always thoughtful and suggestive.
