FOOD FOR PIGS.
[To THE EDITOR Or THE " SPECTATOR.'']
SIR,—If maize were planted during this spring, not too early, it would produce a lot of good food in its green stage for pigs. The parts not eaten would be stamped into manure to be placed on the land next winter. Green maize is a good food for cows and young
[Perhaps the best all-round green orop that can be grown for pigs is lucerne. Enthusiasts say that pigs can almost be fattened on it. A field of lucerne can be cropped continuously for several years; some farmers have kept the same field under lucerne for as many as ten years; and the results to the soil are so good that two or three white crops in succession have been taken off land previously under lucerne. But of course lucerne will not thrive in every soil.—ED. Spectator.]
