At the end of list week King Alfonso signed deerees
which make us almost despair of a peaceful- solution of Spain's political malody. As a punishment for the students' strike, with which, in many respects, the academic body was found to be in sympathy, the GOvern- ment has closed the University of Madrid until October, 1989, and inflicted similar penalties on several. provincial' universities and the chief " technical schools " in Madrid and Barcelona. Royal CommisSions are to investigate • the causes of the akitation, and in the meantime to take over the control of the offending institutions. The students' recognized leader, Senor Sbert, has been deprived of all: civil rights 'iithOut a hearing—a step which can only add to the unpopularity of the Dictatorship abroad; since this young man was at last attempting to create an organized student body worthy to take its place in the International Federation of University Students. .
