Original belief

Sir: Richard Ingrams in his review of The Making of Mankind on BBC2 (9 May) pours scorn on the evolutionary explanation of Man's origins. What does he himself believe? Is he a Creationist? I know that he believes the Turin Shroud to be genuine, but does he go so far as to accept Bishop Ussher's date for the creation of the world in 4004 ix? He accuses scientists of dogmatism, but if he watched Leakey's programme carefully he must be aware of the intense debate going on in scientific circles about the actual workings of evolution. Leakey himself may have rejected a spiritual explanation for Man's appearance on this planet, but this is certainly not true of many other scientists who accept the theory of evolution.
