A strong team .

Sir: May I make one comment, of a number I could make, on Edward Heathcoat Amory's article 'The end of the supermar- ket queue' (16 May)? I do not believe a large retail business can be run successfully as a 'dictatorship' or 'autocracy'. Strong leadership, clear vision, a disciplined approach and great attention to trading detail are certainly required, but success can only be achieved by a team, not by an individual. The article is unjust to those who made a major contribution to the com- pany's success during my chairmanship of Sainsbury's, notably my brother Simon and his successor, the late Sir Roy Griffiths, as deputy chairmen, and Joe Barnes and Tom Vyner as managing directors.
