We are far from saying that the situation, from the

point of view of the Allies, is anything but most grave. At the same time, it would be foolish to shut our eyes to the fact that the Germans are engaged in a terrific gamble. In no operation in their colossal theatres of war have they reached, or are they in sight of resoling, a definite conclusion. Everything is patchy and half finished. Before we leave the subject of Serbia we should add that the veil of mystery still envelops the actions and intentions of the French and British forces which landed at Salonika, and are still being reinforced.
