Ave atque Vale

David Watt's contribution in this issue is his last article as our Political Correspondent. He leaves in a few weeks to become the Washington correspondent of the Financial Times. Actually he was due to join them some months ago, but stayed to help us through the general election period here. His successor, who will start writing regularly next week, is Alan Watkins. Before anyone tries to prove that he is Lord Blakenham in disguise, I had better point out that his only venture into politics was as a Socialist councillor. Which ought to bring me in a balancing number of Tory complaints.
