Par for the course

THE latest McKinseyite in place is Roger Holmes, chief executive apparent at Marks & Spencer. He is said not to be brilliant with people and knows no more about sell- ing clothes than Mr Cruickshank knew about broking stock, but the strategic reports he writes are fabulous. That sounds like par for the course. The Confederation of British Industry was led by three McKin- seyites, one after another, culminating in the lofty Adair Turner. After this the CBI's members opted for a more down-to-earth model from Birmingham, who would be less interested in promoting Europe's single currency and more in making sure that they had roads to run their trucks on and petrol to put in the tanks of the trucks. One McK- inseyite who does not have breakfast with Tony is William Hague, but if his present job does not work out I am sure that the club will look after him.
