Desert of Days

At first sight, Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, Leader of the House of Commons, will be in a position over these next three months that makes him the envy of all his predecessors. He will have time and to spare before the House rises at the end of July. He will be able, with a song in his heart, to promise debates on almost everything. I am not sure he is to be envied. If the Socialists are wise they will give the Finance Bill an easy Passage, and even the RPM Bill can't last for ever. Eighteen days (what about twenty-five?) for the Whitson recess will help, but it is the eight weeks after the House returns that cast their long shadow. Supply days, debates on foreign affairs and crank days will be the main ingredients and the mixture does not make the Political pulse stir. Roll on, August Bank Holiday!
