NEWS OF THE WEEK.

THE Irish are always loyal to the person of the Monarch, and are preparing an enthusiastic reception for her Majesty, who landed at Kingstown on Thursday morning. Royal progresses, how- ever formal and ceremonious they may appear to people who, because clothes are not part of the man, therefore despise breeches, still pro- duce much good. Any pleasant break to the monotony of the popular life is an excellent thing, and the welcome paid to the Sovereign wakes people up to the sense that they belong to a nation and not to a village or a district. It binds classes together by bringing before them a common and a pleasurable excitement, and one which stirs a feeling beyond that elicited by any momentary spectacle. It is not every sovereign in Europe who can afford to popularize majesty, but Queen Victoria can lose nothing by contact with any class of her subjects.
