The only home events of the week have been the
defeat of the Liberal candidate in South Lancashire, and the speech of Mr. Roe- buck at Sheffield, both indicating the increased carelessness of the Liberal party to its own best interests. Tile Whigs can carry South Lancashire whenever they are excited enough to agree among them- selves, and the absence of excitement betrays a widespread ignorance of the true political situation. In Sheffield, Mr. Roebuck, once a Radical, if not more, applauded the Government of Austria for filching a constitution, and decried the Hungarians for their "want of wisdom" in objecting to the theft. He asserted, moreover, that lie knew—he repudiated supposition, and absolutely knew—that the King of Italy had contracted to surrender Sardinia whenever the French troops withdrew from Rome. In other words, Baron Ricasoli has either foresworn himself, or is ignorant of the most important transactions effected tinder his own administration. We prefer on an Italian question the assertion of the Premier of Italy to that of the friend of the monarch who chains down Venice.
