STS,—Has no Oxford man reminded you that "Pereunt et imputantur " is emblazoned on the dial of All Souls' College, and that it comes from an epigram of Martial (v. 20) :—

"Nunc vivit sibi neuter, hen, bonosque Soles effugere atque abire sentit : Qui nobis pereunt et imputantnr. Quisquam vivere cum eclat, moratur I"
