Animal welfare

Sir: Thank you for your editorial which appeared on August 10. • In fact four members have been expelled to date. The undersigned was present at a great number of sessions when the 'Independent Enquiry' met last January and again last May. I cannot be compared to the people Who do such wonderful practical work to help the strays of our country, as represented by these four expelled members: Mrs Entwistle, Mrs Gibbs, Mr C. Bush and Dr Allen. Their unforgivable sin in the eyes of the RSPCA consisted in presenting in an outspoken Way their cases to the panel which, Incidentally, its chairman, Mr C. Sparrow, QC declared as not being a public enquiry.

I am however, one of the legion that in the past have tried to assist the work of the RSPCA by donations. I regret to state that now knowing the way these donated funds are being spent, I shall not.contribute one further penny to this society until it has undergone long overdue large-scale corrective changes; but will support others with, as you say,. sharper conscience and a better sense of principle . . " and of course the voluntary workers like Mrs Entwistle, Mrs Gibbs, etc. I will then be certain that my money will help in alleviating directly needy animals and not be wasted on exaggerated administrative needs.
