Job offer to Glover

From Mr Roger Mosey Sir: Stephen Glover (Media, 17 August) seems to be having a funny turn. We would not have invited Andrew Neil to present Newsmght if we didn't agree that he was a serious figure, and I am on the record as saying that we will cast our net widely in looking for the third Newsnight presenter. I said we should look at writers on the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph as well as the Guardian; and we would, of course, welcome applications from The Spectator — including from Mr Glover if he wants to throw his hat into the ring.

But he will have to become better at sums. Working out a cost per viewer for News 24 based on its average audience is as meaningless as calculating the worth of a newspaper by the number of people who happen to be reading it at a given minute. The fact is that 3.8 million people per week watch News 24 via multichannel television, and that number increases to 10 million if you include viewers to simulcasts on BBC1 or BBC2. So the cost works out at £5 per viewer per year for a round-the-clock television news service, which in our view is good value.
