The promoters of the British Empire Exhibition should put their

house in order quickly. Mr. John X. Merriman, in the South African House of Assembly last week, described the Union's grant of £50,000 as " senseless extravagance upon a tomfool exhibition." This view, although endorsed by General Herzog, is by no means universal in South Africa, but the longer the promoters delay in settling their differences the more time there will be for working up opposition to the undertaking.
