Pale copy?

Sir, In his review of Getting There by William Bloom (whose literary agent I am), Auberon Waugh writes: "It is no wonder that the Americans are losing interest in British writing if the bravest and most forward-looking thing we can produce is a pale copy of the American model."

have just been informed by Mr Bloom's American publishers, Grove Press, that they will be making proposals for the publication of Getting There in the United States. As a matter of further interest, two other American publishers have expressed their desire for the book and its American publication.

However, speaking of "pale copies" as we are, I have learned that Mr Waugh's own latest novel, A Bed of Flowers, has been unable to find an American publisher, so Mr Waugh may well have a point.
