Sydney Smith Association

Sir: Such has been the response to the vari- ous Sydney Smith events held during this year to commemorate the 150th anniver- sary of his death that we have been encour- aged to form an Association to perpetuate his memory and achievements. Sydney Smith was the brightest, indeed the most incandescent of Regency clergymen; he was an enlightened social reformer and a pro- ponent of Catholic emancipation as well as a genial wit and bon viveur. The Association proposes to arrange annual events and receptions in the various localities in which he served, and hopes to support the church- es connected with his career.

A modest annual subscription of £5 is sought to cover expenses. Those wishing to participate should contact the Hon. Secre- tary at the address below.
