Sir: In your last issue (January 10, p. 24), the University of London advertised a course of lectures on the fashionable subject of linguistics. The second lecture was on 'a transformational versus interpretive [sic] approach.' The correct word is interpretative. If this is the new science of language, it is not a substitute for a good primary education.
